We are a program of the State University of New York College Environmental Science and Forestry that is funded primarily by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and its partners.

Our mission is to facilitate the conservation of New York’s biodiversity by providing comprehensive information and scientific expertise on rare species and natural ecosystems to resource managers and other conservation partners.

We work collaboratively with partners inside and outside New York to support stewardship of New York’s rare plants, rare animals, and significant natural communities, and to reduce the threat of invasive species to native ecosystems.

Our staff have expertise in ecology, botany, zoology, geographic information systems, and database programming. Collectively we have over 325 years of experience in gathering, processing, and analyzing data to support land conservation and stewardship!

Our five-year plan lays out how we will combine field inventories, scientific analyses, expert interpretation, and comprehensive databases on New York’s flora and fauna to deliver quality information to partners working in natural resource conservation.

The NatureServe Network empowers people to sustain biodiversity by making sure everyone has access to the knowledge they need to be better stewards of our shared lands and waters.
