EPA funds a wetland sampling effort in each state to help them assess wetland quality across the United States. This assessment occurs every five years and is based on a random draw of wetland sites across the country. We typically sample 16 sites in NY using EPA Sampling protocol.

National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA) is a nation-wide effort coordinated by the US EPA to assess our nation's wetland resources. Completed every five years, 2016 was the second year of NWCA sampling, and the first year that NYNHP managed the NWCA sampling in NYS. During the 2016 NWCA sampling effort, we surveyed 14 wetlands located in Erie, Wayne, Cayuga, Lewis, Jefferson, Warren, and Suffolk counties. This effort would not have been possible without our public and private partners, and landowners who granted us permission to sample on their property - thank you!
More information about this project is available on the US EPA NWCA 2016 website.
Role: NYNHP was contracted by TetraTech to assist their field sampling efforts (TetraTech served as project lead for NYS).
More information about this project is available on the NWCA 2011 results website.
